All over the world, Filipinos are known to be carers. We are known in the industries of caring, hospitality and customer support. It is innate in us to be nurturers. Care giving does not end with our parents, children, family and loved ones but is experienced by our friends, colleagues, customers, neighbors and even people we just met on the street. It simply makes us feel good to be of service to others.
In the process of serving others, we tend to neglect our own need for self-care, sometimes to the point of thinking we are selfish if we attend to our own needs first. But, as a famous saying goes, “We can not give what we do not have”. Thus, we can not give care to the most important people in our lives when we do not take time to care for ourselves. Likewise, we cannot put out so much energy for our passions when we do not take time to recharge.
Start a habit of self-care now. Here are some ways:
1. Take Time in Silence
Practice meditation. If you feel meditation isn’t for you, have some quiet coffee time in the morning in a place in your home or office that you are comfortable. Or how about creating a playlist of calming music and listening to it on the way to work. Whatever works for you, take moments to find quiet down time to settle your mind.
In the silence of our souls, we hear our own self. We can hear own deepest needs and find inner wisdom in the stillness of our minds.
2. Express! Don’t Suppress!
Let out all the things that are burdening you. Find an avenue to express all these things. How about trying art, creative writing, dancing or singing?
Expressing our selves through art has a cathartic effect.
Find your art medium that works for you!
3. Connect with Nature
Nature has a way of healing us. Watching the clouds pass by or leaves dance with the wind allows us to take a break and pause from our busy schedules and appreciate the present. It even connects us to something greater than ourselves.
4. Connect with People
You are not alone! Connect with people who share the same experience as yours. Keep your loved ones, family and friends. Surround yourself with the people who are positive and avoid people who suck the energy out of you.
5. Invest on Your Own Well-being
We invest in gadgets, clothes and other material things we own but when was the last time we invest on our own well-being? Get that massage and spa, go on an out-of-town vacation, have a retreat, attend that workshop you’ve wanted to attend. YOU DESERVE IT!
In line with this self-care tips, we are inviting you to Arts For Self-Care Workshop, a 2-Day workshop on learning self-care through arts, to regain more energy for the things that matter most in your life.

Take care!

Love this! And yes, we can't pour from an empty cup. We should learn to fill our tank and invest in our well-being.
Thanks for sharing this, Carol!
